The iPhone is 8 years old today. It was January 9, 2007 when Apple famously re-invented the phone by launching the iPhone. Steve Jobs gave the best keynote of his life, and changed the mobile landscape forever.
Before January 9, 2007, BlackBerry was the dominant platform in the US, and Windows Mobile was strong in Asia. Microsoft was the dominant tech company, although Google was coming on strong. Apple was a hot company, but mainly sold Macs and iPods.
The world didn't know that it wanted a better phone until it heard Steve Jobs famously say, “And we are calling it, iPhone.”
It wasn't long before everyone wanted a touchscreen phone, whether it was an iPhone or Android device. BlackBerry started its slow decline into oblivion even after releasing a touchscreen device of its own. Palm would try to enter the mobile phone arena only to be run out of business.
The launch of the iPhone took Apple from a hot company, to the largest company on the planet. The iPhone business alone would grow to be larger than Microsoft or Google.
Happy Birthday iPhone! You're only 8 today.
