AT&T has been rolling out FaceTime over cellular in stages. The company wanted to make sure that their system could handle the extra data required. AT&T is apparently ready to roll the service out to a wider group of its customers. Anyone on an AT&T tiered data plan can now use FaceTime even when they're not on WiFi.
If you're still grandfathered on an unlimited plan you're out of luck. You'll have to use WiFi. What's the point of an unlimited plan if you can't use it? AT&T should be forced to honor the plans they previously sold as "unlimited" and stop throttling and playing tricks with so called "unlimited" plan customers.
As a result of ongoing testing, we’re announcing AT&T will enable FaceTime over Cellular at no extra charge for customers with any tiered data plan using a compatible iOS device.
This means iPhone 4S customers with tiered plans will be able to make FaceTime calls over the AT&T cellular network. AT&T previously made FaceTime over Cellular available to customers with a Mobile Share plan and those with an LTE device on tiered plans.
