New fully assembled iPhone 5 photos have emerged courtesy of French blog Nowhereelse.fr. The pictures confirm what we already know - the iPhone 5 will be taller but not wider than the iPhone 4.
Why did Apple decided against a wider iPhone's display? They could have made typing much easier and given those with poor vision slightly larger icons and text to work with. Apparently, Apple believes we simply need less scrolling on our phones. I believe this is simply a marketing move that allows them to say the iPhone has a 4 inch display in a world where nearly all smartphones are going larger.
I've written in the past about how Palm opted for teeny weeny displays with the Palm Pre and it killed them. The whole world was going for larger screens and for some odd reason Palm chose to got smaller. Look what happened to them. I don't think the display will sink Apple, but it will definitely cause me to look at other options. I'm very ready for a new phone as the iPhone 4 is feeling tired and slow. If the new iPhone is faster I'll stick with it, but it will need to be very compelling for me to put up with a phone that is so much smaller than other Android phones. I think Samsung, HTC, and Motorola have proved that 4.3 inches is just about right for displays and Apple should pay attention.
Apple usually exceeds my expectations so I'll wait to see it to make my final judgement. I am cautiously pessimistic however. Since Steve Jobs left us Apple isn't quite as compelling as they used to be.
