New rumors say that the iPhone 5 will be announced on September 12, and released on the 21st. Add to that the multitude of leaked photos and videos, and I think we have a pretty good idea of what the new iPhone will look like. At this point I am cautiously pessimistic.
I reserve the right to be completely wrong about the iPhone 5 because it’s totally possible I could be blown away by what Apple comes up with. I’ve certainly been blown away in the past, but this time it sure seems like Apple is missing the boat.
The main problem I have with what we’ve seen so far is the display. It appears that the iPhone 5 will be the same width as the iPhone 4, but taller. That allows Apple to reach a 4” (probably HD) display, but it means the icons on the display will be the same size as the are now. Is there anything wrong with that? Not really, but I was seriously hoping for a slightly larger set of icons and keys which would make typing on the phone much easier. At a time when most other phones are moving up in size, Apple seems to be staying pretty much in line with what they have now. I think that's a mistake. Hopefully I'm wrong and Apple is widening things up a bit and making things appear slightly larger.
I’m sure Apple has considered all of their options and decided that one-handed use is easier with the current width, but I beg to differ. The display size on the current iPhone seems so 2007. At a time when most manufacturers are going much bigger, and Samsung is having major success with larger phones, it sure seems like Apple will miss the boat unless they give us a bit more size.
The other aspects that have been leaked about the iPhone 5 seem fine to me. We can expect a faster processor, better camera, and thinner case, which all sound fine. Even the smaller dock connector is fine as long as they provide an adapter to make my existing cables and accessories work. The only deal breaker for me is a new display that still feels small and cramped. Please Apple, prove me wrong!
