iPad Pros and Cons

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - April 05, 2010

Were you one of the 300,000 plus people who went out to pick up an iPad on Saturday? The revolutionary device from Apple caused quite a stir. There are a multitude of reviews out there and even some tear down guides. After spending the weekend with the iPad we've come up with a few pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Revolutionary device
  • Elegant
  • Fantastic battery life (10 hrs)
  • Keyboard makes typing easy
  • Fast
  • Lots of apps
  • Great for gaming
  • Responsive touchscreen
  • Movies and photos look great

    Cons:

  • Too heavy for its size
  • Not easy to hold in one hand
  • Kindle is easier on the eyes for reading books
  • No camera
  • No slot for external media

Is this a must have device? No. Is it way cool? Yes. Apple has done a great job at creating a revolutionary device that some say is the most important computing development since the Macintosh computer debuted in 1984. The iPad is easy to use and fun to play with.

We picked up a 64GB version for $699 but quickly realized that may be overkill. If you're going to use it as your main device, and carry lots of music and movies on it you'll need the space. For gaming and regular apps you won't really need 64GB. We recommend picking up the 32GB version for $599. That said, if you can afford the 64GB version, go for it.

One of the main drawbacks of the iPad is the weight. In fact, it was a bit shocking. At 1.5 lbs it really seems heavy for its size. When you pick it up you just don't expect it to be so heavy. Trying to read an ebook in bed with the iPad is uncomfortable. If you're using it on your lap, the floor, or a table, the weight is not an issue, but for such a slim device the weight is almost a deal breaker. Let's hope Apple can bring the weight down in future versions of the iPad.

While the iPad is marketed for its web browsing capabilities and easy email access, it really shiens as a gaming device. The games on the iPad are addicting and just fun to play. You could easily blow a couple hours of your day or more with the games on the iPad. Check out the App Store and you'll find a multitude of fun games for the iPad.

The iPad will surely give Apple a lot of new customers that will likely also purchase iPhones and Macs. From this perspective it's a perfect situation for Apple. Other companies are now working on their own tablet devices and once again Apple has set the pace for the world. If you haven't got yours yet you should at least make a trip to the Apple Store to check it out. It's definitely worth a look.
