It seems that Verizon Wireless had the opportunity to be the exclusive Apple iPhone provider, but the No. 2 U.S. cellphone carrier passed on the deal almost two years ago. Apple's rich financial terms and other demands seem to have killed the deal for Verizon Wireless.
According to USAToday, Apple wanted "a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers." Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president said, "We said no. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial."
Once Verizon passed on the deal Apple went over to Cingular who now has the exclusive on the iPhone. Was it the right move for Verizon? Time will tell.
