Apple is apparently working on a competitor to Google Now. According to Mark Gurman of 9to5mac, Apple is working on a project codenamed "Proactive" which will provide relevant information to users based on Siri, Contacts, Calendar, Passbook, and other third-party apps. Apple's "hook" in this area will apparently focus around user privacy. In other words, Apple will respect user privacy in a way that is different than Google.
Whatever the final name of the service is called, it will apparently reside in the left pane to the left of the Home Screen. Remember when Spotlight lived there? It is unclear when Apple will release Proactive. There seems to be some debate in the company about whether to release the entire package in iOS 9, or release a scaled down version and improve it over time.
If you want the real scoop on this new initiative at apple, check out Mark Gurman's post on 9t05mac. He is usually right on target as he has insanely good sources inside of Apple.
