Apple released 2-step authentication on many of its properties in 2013 but there were still holes in the armor. Today, Apple has rolled out 2-step authentication for its communications services, iMessage and FaceTime. 2-step authentication allows you to have a second layer of security when logging into your accounts. To login, you need your username/email and password and a 2nd factor security code. This feature adds another layer of protection from hackers and cuts down on fraud.
Apple continues to step up its security across all its properties. After the now infamous iCloud hack last year, Apple has put extra focus on securing its platforms.
