The iPhone is seven years old today. It was seven years ago today that the world was lining up to get their hands on the revolutionary phone. Smartphones had been around for years, but Apple had raised the bar to a whole new level on June 29, 2007.
Tactile keyboards with small displays were the norm in 2007. BlackBerry was the dominant platform and the Palm Treo was popular too. Other phones and PDA's required a stylus, and the phones were not that powerful.
I bought the iPhone on launch day and thought it was interesting, but was frustrated by the touch keyboard. I loved the large screen and YouTube app, but I could not get away from the tactile keyboard on my Treo. I kept buying iPhones, but rarely used them until I forced myself to learn to type on the soft keyboard. At some point it all just clicked and I haven't looked back.
The iPhone launched a whole new generations of phones and today most smartphones do not include a keyboard. Thank you, Apple, for the vision, commitment, and dedication to the gadget I now use most.
