Remember the days when the iPhone had a polycarbonate body? If the rumors are true, a new budget iPhone will take us back a few years with a polycarbonate back. This time the back will not be curved, but going back to a polycarbonate body will allow Apple to make a more affordable iPhone for emerging markets.
The leaked photo above is supposedly from case manufacturer Tactus. The body is slightly taller and wider than the iPhone 5 and it will reportedly be offered in several colors.
Would you buy a cheaper iPhone if it had a polycarbonate back? I know we've heard a lot of rumors, but I just find this hard to believe. Apple doesn't usually follow the expected path that other companies take. They also have never released a budget product that I know of. None of the Macs have had a budget line, and the iPod, iPhone, and iPad have all been premium products. Steve Jobs famously said, "we don't ship crap" and he meant it. While other companies offer several levels of devices from budget to premium, Apple has always only offered premium products. A budget iPhone would be a massive departure and I won't believe it until I see it.
