After a week of strong criticism of Apple by Chinese media, Tim Cook has issued an apology. Chinese customers complained that if they purchased an iPhone 4 or 4S and something was wrong with it, Apple would repair the phones rather than replace them. Chinese law requires a one year warranty on new devices so Apple was being accused of repairing rather than replacing to get around the warranty law. The media claimed the same phones in the US would simply be replaced and they accused Apple of mistreating the Chinese people. Apple pointed out that the iPhone 5 is usually replaced, but that the 4 and 4S are sometimes able to be repaired.
Tim Cook's letter is linked from Apple's Chinese website and tries to explain Apple's position. Mr. Cook admits that poor communication maybe to blame for Apple's "arrogant" response. He outlines clearer warranty policies on the iPhone 4 and 4S, but stopped short of making any warranty changes.
Apple is right here and the Chinese media is wrong, period.
