Gmail for iOS has been updated again, and brings a nice feature. You can now swipe through your messages without returning to the inbox just like Gmail for Android. By the way, this is really how every app should work in iOS. We need a lot more swiping and fewer navigation buttons. Google has implemented this feature quite nicely and the Gmail app is really turning out to be a nice alternative to Apple's Mail.
Give it a try. You can start at the first message in your inbox and swipe through all messages until you get the end. You can go back and forth between messages without returning to the inbox view.
Google is really stepping up its game with Gmail for iOS. Although the app still feels like an add-on compared to the Mail app, the responsiveness has been greatly improved and you can use it as your main email app. I still use Apple's Mail app with Gmail via Exchange, but I use the Gmail app for all searches and replying via another domain.
