Apple released iOS 6.1 a couple of weeks ago, and some users are complaining of battery drain and overheating issues. This has become a regular occurrence with iOS updates. In fact, I don't remember an iOS update that didn't cause some battery issues. It's so normal these days that I always wait at least a week to update my devices to see how things shake out. I finally upgraded the other day which was apparently too soon.
TheNextWeb reports that some users started complaining of battery issues on January 28, the day iOS 6.1 was released. TNW suspects the issue could have to do with Apple Mail's handling of Exchange accounts. Some people guess that Exchange gets caught in a sync loop and runs the battery down by constantly checking the server. It also causes excessive transaction logging in Exchange which cause performance issues. Removing the Exchange account, or performing a factory reset, seems to solve the issue.
One user in the Apple Support Forums posted a possible solution:
I went to see the genius’ yesterday. My problem was that my usage was almost identical to my stand by times, which means that something was continuing to run in the background after closing all the apps.
I was told to turn off location services and then one by one turn each in turn to see which one was causing the drain on the battery. I was impatient so just factory reset the handset which seems to have fixed the problem.
TNW reports Vodafone UK has been texting their iPhone 4S customers warning them not to upgrade to iOS 6.1. Apple has already sent out the beta of iOS 6.1.1 to developers so hopefully a solution is on the way.
I am running iOS 6.1 with Exchange, and I have NOT noticed any issues so far. How is your battery life going?
