Why would Apple release a 128GB iPad? After all, they just released the 4th generation iPad a few months ago and they didn't launch it then. Is it for power users who want more memory? Is it for users who want to carry a large music library around? Maybe, but it more likely has something to do with Microsoft's Surface Pro launch.
Surface Pro will have a 128GB version and Apple knows it. Offering a 128GB version of the iPad takes direct aim a the Surface Pro and effectively disrupts its launch. It also reminds people that Apple products can be used in every situation, pro applications included. Apple is keenly aware of its competition and the announcement of the 128GB iPad cannot be by accident. They obviously do not want to give up any area of the tablet market to Microsoft and be surprised later.
Typically, users of tablets store a lot of data in the cloud and therefore wouldn't need that much local storage. Sure it would be nice to be able to take a lot of movies on the road, but is it worth the price? The average iPad user probably wouldn't think so, but a pro user might.
We won't know how successful the new 128GB iPad is for several months. I have a feeling it's a great move for Apple and it will do just what it is intended to do. Give Microsoft a hard time gaining traction in the tablet market.
