Apple announced the iPhone 5 today. Were there any surprises? Not really. Most people in the industry pretty much knew what was coming before Apple's event today. Everyone is blogging about it so I won't rattle off all the specs here. I'll just say I'm very disappointed. Yes, the iPhone 5 will likely be the biggest consumer product launch of the year, and maybe ever, but it's still disappointing to me.
The main reason I'm disappointed is the screen size. Apple is going taller, but not wider at all. That's a mistake in my view. At a time when the world has decided that larger screens are the way to go, Apple is sticking to their guns. The logic here is that it is easier to use the iPhone with one hand because of the width. That's true, but I still say a slightly larger display would have been better and Apple will continue to lose marketshare because people want larger phones.
The iPhone 5 has lots of nice features like LTE, better camera, faster processor, iOS 6, etc., etc. These new features make iPhone 5 the best phone that Apple has released so far, but this feels like a modest upgrade and NOT a major product announcement with the usual Apple hype. I was hoping for the usual Apple Announcement "high" and I just don't feel any of it. I'm not excited at all about the iPhone 5, and I'm really tired of my iPhone 4's teeny weeny screen. I'm actually thinking of going out to purchase a Samsung Galaxy S 3 today. We'll see.
