I was anxious to see the new iPad when it was released about a month ago. I was so excited to see the new Retina display in action and I just knew that if I went into the Apple Store I would walk out with a new iPad. I bought my the original iPad on launch day, and bought my iPad 2 on launch day. I was expected to buy the latest iPad on launch day but I didn't. The funny thing is, I don't regret it.
The new iPad rocks. The display is unbelievably crisp and clear. But other than the display, I cannot find a reason to buy it. The new iPad looks almost exactly like my iPad 2. A side by side comparison isn't as shocking as I expected. It turns out, the iPad 2 had a pretty darn good display to begin with. The new iPad's display is better, but it's not compelling enough for me for some reason.
The other sticking point for me is the new iPad runs hot. The original iPad was so "magical" because it didn't get hot. It was a cool slate that somehow showed you your content without making noise, and without getting hot. My iPad 2 gets a little warm after extended use, but the new iPad gets quite a bit warmer. It's not a deal breaker, but another reason that I don't need to give up my iPad 2 just yet.
I'm usually the guy who has the latest Apple gadget on launch day, but this time I just wasn't compelled to buy the new iPad. I've played with several of them since it launched and I'm still not compelled to get one. I can't believe it. I didn't buy the new iPad and I don't regret it.
