The US Air Force Air Mobility Command announced today that it awarded a $9.36 million contract to purchase up to 18,000 iPad 2s for use in military aircraft. As we've heard in the commercial airline industry, the iPads will be used to replace the 40 lbs flight bags that pilots are required to carry. The electronic flight bags (iPads) will save weight and therefore save fuel.
The contract was awarded to Executive Technology Inc. of Phoenix, AZ who will give the military a discounted price of around $520 per iPad.
The iPads will not necessarily be purchased at once, and may not even be purchased within the same year that the contract was awarded.
