Unfortunately, Sparrow isn't perfect, but we'll talk about that later. Several reviews have come out recently of a new mail client for iOS. Sparrow is actually a Gmail client for iOS and the best Gmail client I’ve ever used. Sparrow is even better than the native Gmail app on my Android phone, but don’t worry, it’s not just for Gmail users. Sparrow also supports IMAP so you can use it with mail services other than Gmail.
Sparrow is fast, sleek, gorgeous, and a joy to use. I’ve never been this excited about an email client, ever. There is only one problem with Sparrow however, and it is a major problem. Sparrow does not do push email. The reason is technically complex, but the bottom line is Apple doesn’t allow it on the iPhone. Sparrow is trying to convince Apple to change its policies so third-party iOS mail apps can get push email. You can lend your voice to the effort.
There are a couple of workarounds. You can use a service like Boxcar, but frankly I don’t advise that. I simply have my iPhone Mail app setup to receive push emails from Gmail so I get mail notifications. Once I get the notification I launch Sparrow and wait for my mail to download. It’s an irritant for sure, but the mail app is good enough to warrant it.
If you use Gmail check out Sparrow!
