Let's face it, Apple is behind. The company that changed the smartphone forever is now behind the curve in the smartphone world. iOS is starting to feel old at a time when other companies are moving ahead with operating systems that feel fresh. Microsoft has a brand new UI with Windows Phone 8. No more boring icons that don't tell you anything. Android has several new UI changes that make the phone feel fast, and widgets that give you information at a glance. Yet iOS is still stuck on rows of stagnent icons, and a Home button as the primary way to get around the OS. Apple needs to move the ball forward.
Apple made a bold move in dropping iOS's chief architect, Scott Forstall, but now what? Will they wait until next summer to release something new? I don't think they should wait that long.
Apple could easily release an updated version of iOS with a few key changes that would have a big impact, and they could accomplish it in a few months. What if they just revamped notifications to make them less intrusive (like webOS notifications), and gave us some quick links to WiFi and Bluetooth in the notification center? Would that be so hard? What if they gave us more swiping in Safari so we didn’t have to rely on back and forward buttons? What if they gave us the ability to see Read vs Unread messages in the Mail app. Would that take so long?
Apple has a long way to go in getting iOS back to the front of the pack in terms of smartphone operating systems, but they could give us a few jewels now to keep us around. I know a lot of people who are starting to look elsewhere in terms of smartphones because Apple just feels old. They don’t want to wait until next summer or next fall to get something new. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been calling their name for awhile now. C’mon Apple, give us something soon. Let us know that you’re really going to move forward and make the best smartphone on the planet again. Give us a taste of Jony Ive’s influence over the OS to hold us over until the next iPhone is released. We all know the iPhone 5 has the slickest design, but the OS is behind and you know it.
Crossing my fingers...
