Apple declined to break down iPhone sales by model when it released its financials, but a recent survey conducted by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners did it for us. It turns out that most people shopping for a new iPhone choose the 4S. In fact, 89% of U.S. consumers who bought an iPhone between October 14 (iPhone 4S launch day) and December 2011 chose the 4S, while 7% chose the iPhone 4, and 4% bought a 3GS. These numbers are not surprising at all. Most people want the latest and greatest device.
What is more amazing is the number of people who upgraded from an iPhone 4 which was barely a year old.
Apple fans are diehards, and money is not really the deciding factor it seems.

“An amazing 19 percent of all iPhone buyers upgraded from the iPhone 4, a phone barely a year old at the time of the launch. Forty-two percent of iPhone buyers broke existing carrier contracts to get the new iPhone 4S. And 19 percent of these iPhone 4S buyers sold their old iPhone in the secondary market.
