iOS 5 announcement nice, but a little disappointing

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - June 07, 2011

The big Apple Keynote yesterday announced some exciting features for OS X Lion, and iCloud, but the iOS 5 announcements were just okay. Apple announced many new features for iOS 5, but most of them seem like features that should have been added a long time ago. Apple seems to be playing catch up when it comes to iOS 5.

There are nice features like photo editing, new features in the camera app are nice, Twitter integration, and an on board dictionary, but so much of what they announced have been available on other platforms for years.

One of the big features was improved notifications. From what I saw the new notifications feature is basically a clone of Android's notification system. Is this really something to get excited about? Palm's webOS notification system has had Apple beat for 2 years now. Why does it feel like Apple is overly excited about playing catch up?

What I didn't see was a better way to get to settings for things like WiFi and GPS. If you have Jailbroken your iPhone one swipe across the top gets you quick access to these settings.

What about contact photos in the contacts and messaging app? Every other platform has these by now but Apple is still behind. Although they announced a new SMS system, the app does not compare to the jailbreak app BiteSMS. This is another area where Apple seems to be playing catchup.

Overall I'm happy with the new features in iOS 5, but I was hoping for more. For some odd reason Apple is still overlooking the obvious when it comes to certain UI features in iOS 5. Oh well.

I was much more impressed with the improvements to OS X Lion. What do you think? Are you excited about iOS 5? Tell us in the comments.
