As soon as I saw the Apple Keynote when Steve Jobs introduced the iPad 2 to the world, I knew I would have to get some kind of case, or back case for the iPad 2. I bought my first iPad on launch day and the first thing I noticed about the iPad was how hard it was to hold in one hand while reading, especially when laying down. The weight of the iPad as well as the slick aluminum back make it difficult to hold.
When I picked up the iPad 2 I immediately noticed how much easier it was to hold than the original iPad, but the back is still slippery. Also, when you spend $800 for a gadget you want to make sure it’s protected in case you drop it. (Yes, I admit that even though I’m EXTREMELY careful with my iPad, I did drop it once while sleeping on a plane.) So off I went hunting for a back cover for the iPad 2. There are several different companies that make these back covers, and from what I can gather they are all about the same.
So, how do I protect the back cover of the iPad 2? What's the best iPad 2 protection? I tried the SwitchEasy Cover Buddy for the iPad 2. The Cover Buddy comes in several colors, but I chose the clear plastic because they were out off stock on black. It is well made and fits the iPad 2 like a glove. In fact, after putting the Cover Buddy on my iPad 2 I couldn’t get it off. I had to use a business card to slide between the edges and it was still difficult to remove.
The protection it offers is perfect, and it works with Apple’s Smart Cover. Yes, the automatic on/off still works with the Smart Cover. I did notice that the cut of the case is so exact that sometimes my Smart Cover doesn’t go on exactly right and I have to sort of push it into place. They should probably leave a little more space between the Cover Buddy’s plastic edges in case you don’t line up your Smart Cover just right.
The Cover Buddy is made of hard plastic which feels decent in the hand. I wish it had more of a “rubbery” feel to it, but it’s just clear plastic. It does make it a little easier to hold on to, and I’m a lot less worried about how I place the iPad 2 down on a counter or table because I know the back is protected.
At $24.95 it’s a good deal so I would not hesitate to recommend the Cover Buddy to someone who wants solid protection for their iPad 2.
Now, here is my one reservation. The Cover Buddy is 1.8 mm thick, and weighs around 3-4 oz. It does add some bulk and weight to the iPad 2. In fact, my iPad 2 weighs just a hair more than my iPad without its case on. It’s not that bad, but I definitely notice the extra heft when I pick it up. In other words, I’ve lost the weight reduction in the iPad 2 over the iPad.
If you’re okay with your iPad 2 feeling just about as bulky as the iPad then you’re in business. I’ve found other cases that claim to be 1.4 mm so I’ll be checking out those as well.
