We got an email from an iPhone user today who says AT&T suspended his account even though he was current in his bill. He traveled to Canada on vacation and racked up about $500 in roaming charges. He disputed the charges when he returned from his trip, because he had switched off international roaming on his iPhone. He was told that the setting does not apply to Canada.
Fast forward to a couple weeks later, he woke up one morning and his phone service was shut off. He called AT&T and was apparently told by a representative that the company was worried that he might skip out on the bill, so they suspended his account. This is before the charge even showed up on his bill. He was on auto pay via his credit card so the risk to AT&T was very low. How can this be? His email is below:
How can AT&T justify this kind of behavior? If the charge hasn't even shown up on your account yet, how can they just assume you won't pay it?

This morning AT&T suspended my account. I called them and they said it was because I haven't paid my bill. I told them I'm signed up for auto-pay with my credit card. They started investigating and found out that the credit department had suspended my account because of the roaming charges in Canada. When I told them that I haven't even been billed for it yet they said the credit department was worried I would not pay it and didn't want to risk waiting. Yikes! Then in order to remove the suspension they forced me to sign up for the international roaming plan, which is $25/month. If I didn't sign up for it they wouldn't restore my service. What a bunch of rotten cow dung!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess they only positive thing is that the 1 year cost of the international plan would come out to less than the roaming charges if I were to lose my dispute.....that is, if I stay that long.
During my 13 years with T-Mobile, they never suspended my account....not even at one time when I was 1 month behind on my bill.
