The rumor was that Sprint would sell their iPhone 4S with an unlocked SIM at launch, allowing customers to use any SIM in the iPhone 4S. They always said they would lock down the SIM at some point and it looks like today is the day. According to a leaked internal memo, Sprint is locking the iPhone 4S SIMs with an activation process that is invisible to the user. The memo states that this locking process will not affect users who purchased the iPhone 4S before November 11, 2011.

I purchased a Sprint iPhone 4S on launch day and the SIM was definitely locked. After several conversations with Sprint I was told they would not be unlocking the SIM so I returned the phone.
