Apple announced this morning that America's top CEO, Steve Jobs, is taking another medical leave of absence for an unspecified amount of time. Jobs issued a statement to his team this morning.
"Team,
At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.
I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.
Steve"
Jobs took a leave of absence back in 2009 after receiving a liver transplant, but set a timeline for his return. This time his leave is open ended which makes it seem more serious.
Steve Jobs was reportedly supposed to be at Verizon’s iPhone announcement event last week, but he missed it.
Apple's stock is still up in the US today after the news, but only because the stock market is closed in observance of Martin Luther King day.
According to Forbes, "shares of Apple were down by more than 7% in Frankfurt trading several hours after the news. Futures trading on the Nasdaq indicated Apple’s NY-listed shares were off by 34 cents, or about 0.3% at 10.28 EST."
