Apple offers free iPhone 4 bumpers to help reception issue

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - July 16, 2010

Apple held their iPhone 4 "antennagate" press conference today and did not give much ground. They acknowledged issues with the iPhone 4, but said those issues affected a small number of users. Like many people predicted, Steve Jobs tried to convince the world that the data suggests there is a small problem that has been blown out of proportion. Do you believe him?

Here are Steve's data points today:

  • Apple has sold over 3 million iPhone 4s.
  • The death grip signal degradation thing happens to a lot of smartphones, including the BlackBerry 9700, Samsung Omnia 2, and HTC DROID Eris.
  • 0.55% of iPhone 4 owners have called in to AppleCare to complain of reception issues.
  • The return rate on the iPhone 4 at AT&T stores is 1.7% compared to 6% for the iPhone 3GS last year. (What is the return rate at Apple Stores???)
  • The iOS 4.0.1 released yesterday will fix an error in the signal calculation algorithm that Apple uses to display the number of bars.
  • Apple will give free bumpers to all iPhone 4 users until September 30. If you already bought a bumper you'll get a refund.
  • Apple acknowledged an issue with the proximity sensor and a software fix will be issued soon.

Apple has posted a video of the press conference at the link below.
