Apple says that the iPhone 3G's processor is not powerful enough to run iPhone OS 4.0 but iPhone hacker cdevwill begs to differ. Check out this video of jailbroken iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 4.0 beta complete with multitasking. The OS seems a bit sluggish as it takes a long time to open the apps, but it is working. Keep in mind, it is not working with any apps running audio or video. Those types of apps would likely cripple the 3G, but it's still an interesting hack.
