If AppleInsider is correct, the next version of the iPhone will support multitasking via an Expose-like interface. Sources familiar with the new iPhone firmware say the new iPhone will allow users to "launch multiple apps in the background and quickly switch between them."
Apple originally decided against multitasking in an effort to preserve battery life. It appears they've had a change of heart. By the way, this could spell really bad news for Palm's webOS whose major claim to fame is multitasking.
In OS X Expose works by showing all open windows with their contents, yet the windows never overlap. This would be a tough task on a small iPhone screen so the iPhone version will apparently just show application icons, instead of open windows.
