According to the New York Times a new iPhone app will allow users to bypass AT&T and make calls over WiFi and 3G. The new app byToktumi is called Line2. The software allows users to have a second phone number and is similar to Google Voice. Line2 essentially replicates the iPhone's dialer app and gives you the same experience as you have with your AT&T number.
"Line2 gives your iPhone a second phone number — a second phone line, complete with its own contacts list, voice mail, and so on. The company behind it, Toktumi (get it?), imagines that you’ll distribute the Line2 number to business contacts, and your regular iPhone number to friends and family. Your second line can be an 800 number, if you wish, or you can transfer an existing number."
How is this possible? Didn't Apple reject Google Voice because it works “by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls.” That's what they told the FCC anyway.
If this app is allowed to be in the App store it is a real game changer. Users will be able to buy a low level AT&T plan and then make phone calls over WiFi when they're at work. It also works on an iPod Touch and turns it into a cell phone (as long as you're in a WiFi area).
Will Apple eventually cut Line2 off? We'll see.
