iOS 4.2 update process is buggy and flawed

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - November 22, 2010

Apple released iOS 4.2 today and we've been messing with it all day. If you're going to update your iPad or iPhone to iOS 4.2 be prepared for some frustration.

The iPad update did not go well at all. After the download completed, we immediately received an error 2001. Then we got an error 2006, then an error 20000, and so on. The update process looked like it was continuing but after 20 minutes of looking at the iPad with no progress we had to do a restore.

The iPad restored, but with no apps and no content. Amazingly, after syncing the apps iTunes installed all apps from the iPad but also installed all the iPhone apps from our iPhone. What a pain to go through and delete all the iPhone apps on the iPad and rearrange screens. iTunes created 8 pages of apps when we previously had only 3. Some pages only had 2 apps on it.

The worst part was we had 20 movies copied into an app called Air Sharing HD. iTunes did not back up the whole library so now it will take hours to copy those movies back onto the iPad, via WiFi. Thanks Apple.

Next up was the iPhone update. The process worked better than the iPad, but when it completed we had no media on the iPhone at all. We had to do 2 more syncs to get all the music back. Oh well.
